چکیده

During the past two years 16 cases of nephrosis have been treated with cortisone and/or A.C.T.H. (adrenocorticotrophin) at this hospital. The results of cortisone treatment have been reported previously (Arneil and Wilson, 1952) and corresponding findings for A.C.T.H. are now given and the value of the two hormones compared. The criteria used when including a patient in this investigation and the methods of study have been described in the previous paper. A.C.T.H. was given for a period of 12 days, the daily dose varying from 40 to 80 mg. intramuscularly with 2 to 3 g. of potassium chloride orally. The effect of such treatment on the oedema, albuminuria, serum proteins, plasma cholesterol levels and other biochemical tests are discussed below. Nine patients were treated with A.C.T.H. and were given 15 courses in all; second and third courses are designated (2) and (3) throughout the text. Effects of A.C.T.H. on Oedema

Cortisone treatment of nephrosis.

The accepted picture of the nephrotic syndrome is that of a grossly oedematous patient with massive albuminuria but having no hypertension or azotaemia. The amount of albumin circulating in the plasma is greatly reduced, resulting in a fall in the total protein content and a reversal of the albumin/ globulin ratio. The cholesterol content of the blood is markedly raised. Little is known of the ...

Plasma levels of immunoreactive corticotrophin in patients with Cushing's syndrome.

Plasma levels of immunoreactive corticotrophin (A.C.T.H.) have been determined in 56 patients with Cushing's syndrome by means of a homologous radioimmunoassay. In untreated Cushing's disease (bilateral adrenal hyperplasia due to excessive A.C.T.H. secretion from the pituitary) plasma values ranged from 40 to 200 mumug./ml., between 8 and 10 a.m., compared with a range in normal subjects of 12 ...

Increased haematuria in nephritis during cortisone and A.C.T.H. administration.

In the past few years cortisone and A.C.T.H. have been used in the treatment of nephritis. In the nephrotic state these drugs frequently produce a diuresis (Farnsworth, 1950a; Luetscher, Deming and Johnson, 1951). In haemorrhagic nephritis, however, the results have been variable (Thorn, Merrill, Smith, Roche and Frawley, 1950; Heller, Jacobson and Hammarsten, 1951). The present paper reports a...

Effects of A.C.T.H. on a case of tuberculous meningitis.

Although there are published references to over 200 cases of tuberculous meningitis treated with A.C.T.H., cortisone, or hydrocortisone, very few authors describe the effects of these hormones on patients with over 1 % protein in the C.S.F. Kendig, Choy and Johnson (1956) gave cortisone to a child during two periods when her C.S.F. protein was above 5 g. %; the protein content fell below 1 g. w...

Two cases of aplastic anaemia associated with tumours of the thymus.

Two cases are presented in which aplastic anaemia was associated with thymus tumours. In Case 1 the patient had a pancytopenic aplastic anaemia and was treated with A.C.T.H. The marrow showed regeneration at necropsy. The thymoma in this case was unusual as there was thymic regression with fat replacement which may have been related to A.C.T.H. Case 2 was initially of a pure red cell anaemia wi...
